Interlude · Daily practice

Three minutes a day: leave a little space for yourself

Notice your body, name your feelings, then look after one small need of this moment.

On a windowsill in morning light, a brass and glass hourglass with sand running through it, beside a ceramic cup with a wisp of steam.

Put your phone down and find somewhere to sit comfortably. You don't need an empty mind; just come back and look at yourself as you are right now.

Minute one · Notice your body

Feel your feet on the ground, and notice your shoulders, jaw and breath. Breathe comfortably, without forcing a rhythm.

Minute two · Name the feeling

Ask yourself: “Right now, which feeling am I closest to?” It might be tired, hopeful, irritable, or something you can't name yet. You don't need to do anything with it for now.

Minute three · Look after one small need

Drink a glass of water, stand up and stretch, write down one sentence, or decide to drop one unnecessary task today. Choose a small action you can really do.

After three minutes, take the little bit of yourself you've noticed back into your day.
